Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks for Sunday, November 8th

Hello Dear Readers,

I had a lot of fun last night at the Sire Nation thing at Someday. Sallie Ford & The Sound Outside was good as they always are. I had never seen Tender Forever before. It was pretty enjoyable. She is one of those people who will sing over some really banging beats for one song and then go over and play a soft uke song . Her songs were well written and she had a lot of talking to the audience that was hard to hear from where I was but seemed charming none the less. The best part though was a slide show during one of the songs that she had dedicated to Beyonce which depicted several scenes of the two together by way of some very shoty photoshop work. Anyway here is what looks good, show wise, tonight:

Sunday, November 8th

Mississippi Studios is having a show with Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson, These United States (Lexington/D.C.), and Oh Captain My Captain. One time AristeiA, for whatever reason, opened for Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson. I was kinda excited because he had some members of Grizzly Bear play on his album. Then he and his band took over an hour to set up and I no longer was excited nor did I care, and ended up not liking it. But when I saw that he was playing with Oh Captain, who I think are excellent, and was putting out an album on Saddle Creek, who I also like, I decided to give them another try. The music I heard on myspace sounds okay. To me it sounds like if Spencer Krug form Sunset Rubdown made a folk album, but a little less interesting. These United States, Miles' tour mates, seem to be more interesting. They play rock with a tinge of Americana (probably it is the pedal steel). It is good. And then, of course, there is the real reason I wrote about the show, Oh Captain My Captain. They are great they play pop music by way of David Bazan. It is really really good. The arrangements are perfect. Every member is really good at their instrument and well...it just works really well. If you have not hear how good a toy piano sounds with a bell set playing the same thing, you should come and hear it, because it is awesome. The show is $10 and starts at 9 PM.

Valentine's is having a show with Ages and Ages, AAN, and Sex Life. Ages and Ages used to be called Ages, and before that the main dude was in a band called Pseudosix. The guy knows how to write a song. They only have one up on their myspace, but it is good. It kinda reminds me of some of the 60's psychedelic pop. Mostly I think because of all the vocal arrangements that go on in the song. AAN is awesome. It is dark, it is big, and emotional. It is hard to see them perform and not feel it in you bones. Not necessarily because it is loud, so much as it seems like truth. That being said it does not describe how they sound. There is a lot of cool guitar stuff and vocal effects and textural keyboards and such. I realize looking back at that sentence, that that doesn't really help either. I will suggest that you click on the link provided to see for yourself. Sex Life plays old school electro pop that sounds like it is coming out of the 70's and into the 80's. I really like this description of themselves though, "Sex Life is a collective of three enthusiastic young adults, combining music, choreography, tender love-making, visual art, and hermeneutics." The show is FREE and starts at 9 PM.

Rontoms is having a show with The Always Ready, and Wishyunu. Okay as some of you may have realized by now, I am not always good at describing music. So when I see a description that I feel is accurate regarding a band I will use it. This is what Spectre said that The Always Ready have a "mix of new wave dance-pop sensibilities and post-punk energy". I would tend to agree. Wishyunu is the reason I am writing this show up. Though I have yet to see them. I like what I have heard. It is the mixture of lush synth lines, steady drums, and warm female vocals (that remind me somewhat of Broadcast)that seem to wash over the listener that I like. If that doesn't seem like your thing, then you can skip this one. The show is FREE and starts at 9 PM.

The Carolinas (a house) is having the "Billionth Folked Up Fest". This time they have What Can Skulls Tell Us?, Prescription Pills, Tyler Freeman, Thomas Freridge, and Glass Teeth. Though I could not scrounge up much info on this show (I cannot verify that it is actually the Billonth installment of the series or not), I have been to /played one before and it was a lot of fun. What Can Skulls Tell Us? and Glass Teeth play a DIY skewed take on indie folk that makes it both interesting and engaging. The ALL AGES show is FREE and starts at 7-ish PM.

If you see me at any of these shows, please say "Hi". Because why wouldn't you?

-Ben

Ummm...there is a chance that that house show is not happening. I may have, "not done my research". But Glass Teeth will be playing tomorrow at Dunes.
