I feel sick and terribly sad for Kipp Crawford's family and band mates. I met him at a show. He was really clever, funny and a brilliant drummer. -goldie

It was not unusual for Kipp Crawford to be out pedaling his bicycle at 2 a.m., his mother, Jean Crawford of Ashland says.

"He could have been coming from a gig or a recording session," she said Wednesday. "Music was pretty much central to his entire life."

Crawford, a drummer who played in at least three Portland-based bands -- Celilo, Thanks Kipp and Fractal Quintet -- was run over by two cars as he lay in the roadway near the intersection of North Willamette Boulevard and North Haven Avenue around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Portland police have accused the drivers of two vehicles with drunk driving in connection with the incident that killed the 31-year-old North Portland cyclist.

Police said Crawford was stretched out on the ground when he was hit by a Cadillac driven by 41-year-old Carlos Tyrone McCall, and an Isuzu SUV driven by 44-year-old Felisa Washington-Berry Each arrested and accused of one count of driving under the influence of intoxicants. Washington-Berry was also booked for reckless driving. read full story
