Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks for Tuesday, January 5th

Hello Dear Readers,

I ended up not doing anything after a practice. But tonight I think I will actually go to a show. There is only one that peaked my interest but it looks good. See:

Tuesday, January 5th

The Woods is having a show with Mia Riddle, Themes, and Secret Codes. I saw Mia Riddle play pretty stripped down the other night at Rontoms. She was really good. She has a sweet voice and has well written songs. Tonight she will play with a full band. I am looking forward to it because when I was watching her on Sunday I kept hearing where all of the parts would go. Themes is a band that I am friends with but have never seen play before. They are a two piece consisting of guitars and keyboard and male female vocals. They list themselves as folk but make no mistake, this is not a breezy folk pop duo. The guitars are not acoustic, but baritone. The songs do have harmonies but the piano arrangements are bigger than your average folk group. I am looking forward to seeing them. And then there is the debut of Secret Codes as an actual band. David Kyle used to play by himself by means of a lot of looping and playing along to prerecorded tracks. No he has assembled a very talented group which includes him on guitars, a bass player, a keys/trumpet player (often played play simultaneously), a flute player, and drummer. I have heard recordings of rehearsal and it sounds pretty amazing. It is mostly instrumental right now, but I have been assured will be coming soon. If you like jazzy post rock, you will be into this. The show is $5 and starts at 9 PM.

If you see me at this show please say, "Hi". Because I asked you nicely.

-Ben

This is my prediction of what Themes might sound like tonight at the Woods.
