Big Fish Little Pond Meltdown

Dear imaginary friend,

Do you ever listen to Massive Attack's Mezzanine and freak out about how bad Portland indie music is?

I just did. I'm going to McDonald's to clear my mind.

Love,
Ste. Goldie

There's good and there's bad, I guess. But on the Massive Attack tip (i.e. shit that blows your mind with the way it SOUNDS), a lot of the best production in Portland is coming out of the hip-hop community (Simple of Sandpeople is nuts: myspace.com/dollarsignsimple).

Have you heard Chris Funk's side project, Flash Hawk Parlour Ensemble? He covers a track from that album, and the whole album is sonically dope.

Also, Smoke's 'Bleed' album is an intense headphone listen that will get your blood pumping and remind you of M.A. at times. With more rapping. Listen to "Killa": myspace.com/smokeofoldominion.

OK now I'm officially procrastinating.

Casey -- Right now I am watching on OPB a really interesting show about depression. I am cheered up by the prospect of deep brain stimulation and a possible up turn in Portland's crappy indie music scene... Simple sounded good I will check out the other recommends later.

"turn off your mind relax and float downstream"
is what i instantly want to sample and re-sample and then audio out wire into an mpc and then reroute back into a 4track and play a tambourine on top upon perusing that pic.

p.s. Simple from SandPeeps IS nutzier than cool and deep brain stims=even more so.

you down w/ opb? yeah you know me.

ARM ME WITH HARMONY.

Not being a Portland resident, I'm not going to comment on the state of the Portland indie scene. HOWEVER - last time we played down there, we played with a band called Swim Swam Swum, and I was genuinely blown away. Really interesting and engaging. The place we played, Dunes, was a really cool (if small) venue. I know that sometimes the exceptions make the rule, so I'm not trying to argue; I'm just saying that even if it's bad overall, there is definitely some cool stuff in Portland.

Dear Dannyspkrspkr:

1. Who is 'we' -- please do not assume that i have an idea who you are. I apologize if this sounds rude, BUT I want to make sure that you come back here and keep reading and responding in a way that will build community.

2. I've noticed you've left comments before -- go ahead and say the name of your band and introduce yourself.

3. For not being a resident of Portland you are unnecessarily careful to defend the Portland music scene.

4. Apparently you haven't ever listened to Massive Attacks Mezzanine and thought "boy Portland's music scene is lacking in a polished sound" because if you had had that experience you wouldn't be trying to promote the band Swim Swam Swum to me. Not only is that music the OPPOSITE Of Massive Attack but they are not even remotely anything like a band i would recommend to someone who is having a melt down in regards to as Casey Jarman put it ( "shit that blows your mind with the way it SOUNDS".

5. Yeah there is defiantly some cool stuff in Portland thanks for letting me know.

6. So what's the name of your band and how did you come across CIMTB?

7. So i clicked the link to your name and I still am not sure who you are. Are you in a band called Speaker SPeaker, or are you just blogger....
