DO NOT EVER QUESTION KEITH EMERSON AGAIN

Because the pictures of him flipping an organ over and stabbing it with a dagger weren't badass enough.

Seriously, listen from the 14 minute mark until about 16:30.  Don't think, just fucking do it.

That is all.

An Interview With The Greatest Music Writer Alive

In light of Gulbranson's wonderful interview I thought it wise to seek out my own exclusive interview.

Interviews are fantastic. It gives the reader access to a life that seems distant and brings it right to your face. At best it is a dialogue that enlightens the reader and reflects a persons achievements and thought processes. At worst it is knob slobbing and ego pandering to a celebrity that hardly needs it and could only be described as a waste of good letters; or the meandering musings of someone who is clearly in need of a mental health professional.

Given the breadth of music that I enjoy and the variety of people out there producing, reviewing, critiquing, performing and involved with music; I've had a hard time figuring out who I would like to interview. There is a list of musicians and producers (mostly dead) that I have running in the back of my head but most of them I have the same chance of interviewing as say, Buddha. When I narrowed the list down to living people there was only one person I could think of that I needed to interview. The most handsome, dynamic, creative and all together talented human being to ever grace the face of this planet.

Me.

I was at first trepidatious when I made my decision. Writers are notoriously cranky and reclusive creatures with a penchant for sudden mood swings and violent alcohol fueled depressions. This writer in particular was a prime example of highly irascible mega fauna. I knew that setting was everything, so when I called his agent I asked if we could meet in his local coffee shop. Writers are all addicted to caffeine, I knew it was a sure thing. The agent agreed, the venue was set and I was in business.

Coffee Time is at 21st and Irving in Northwest Portland, a large dimly lit cave takes up the entire back end of the shop and that is where I found my quarry; surrounded by reference books and twitching from his first gallon of caffeine slurry. As I set my backpack down at the opposing seat he did not look up from his laptop at all. I attempted to introduce myself politely and received only a wave of the hand and a incomprehensible grunt. Was this the famed writer or simply some technology obsessed troglodyte? He continued to fiddle with his laptop aimlessly and I eventually got up to leave.

"Wait, get me some more coffee. I haven't shed my human form yet, one more cup and I'll transcend reality. Make it strong and black man."

I set my back down and nodded. The counter was busy, people jostling each other for a chance at awareness. 15 minutes later I returned to the table in the back with two absurdly large cups of brew. I sat down and opened up my laptop. He looked down into the steaming mug and a brief smile rumbled through his beard.

"Ahhhhhhhhh. Practically orgasmic. My thanks sir."

I nodded and fired up my question list.

ME- So Mr. Nelson...

MR. NELSON- Eriq is fine.

M- Eriq then. I understand you've recently moved here to Oregon. How do you find it?

E- Fantastic, actually. I'd been planning the move for a number of years and it would seem that it does not disappoint in the least. The weather suits my clothes.

M- Is there anything that sticks out in your mind? Why Portland instead of say, Eugene or one of the coastal towns?

E- A whole host of reasons. Public transit is near the top of the list. I hail from Richmond, Virgina and it is not a town that is conducive to walking around. You really can't get around that town without a car. I am a big fan of natural preserves and having one in my back yard is a big bonus. Powell's is probably what put it over the top. Easy access to the biggest used bookstore in the world is worth moving across the country. There's an actual literary scene here. Richmond has a one man literary scene. Don't get me wrong, Preston is a great fucking guy but I need more. That and the coffee.

(He pauses, downing an entire 24 oz. coffee in one long smooth pull. I sit, my jaw agape.)

M- Ahem. So how was the trip, did you fly out or drive?

E- I drove with my friend Mabel and I taking turns at the wheel. I rented a U-Haul, packed all of my feces into one receptacle and hit the road. I wanted a physical experience of distance. I feel like moving this far should be accompanied by some grueling physical torment and extreme psychological states. It would cheapen the moment, I think, to make it a one day proposition.

M- How long did that take you? That's what, 3000 miles?

E- Just about. 2,906 miles without detours or stops. All things told it took us 5 days from RVA to Stumptown. We took a few detours to see friends on the way out here in St. Louis and Boulder. All in all a pretty smooth going deal; no bat shit insane moments or breakdowns. Wyoming is fucking terrifying though, there's no actual ground in Wyoming; just wind and rocks. I got airsick about three hours into that chunk of the trip. I didn't even think that I could get motion sickness in a truck. Absurd.

M- So you've been here a few months now, what's next on the agenda? What mind shattering awesomeness will you unleash upon the unworthy?

E- Oh, how you flatter sir. Do go on. I'm just now getting back to my writing habits, working on music reviews again and gearing up to polish off a collection of short stories and my first novel. I've been thinking about playing some music, maybe with friends maybe something more serious. I'm not sure yet.

M- A novel? Are you willing to share any details?

E- No. Fuck off.

M- Fair enough. How about the short stories?

E- There's some stuff up on the web. I don't feel like explaining it to you.

(Awkward pause.)

M- I'm interested in your music writing. How do you approach the topic of review? What is the process?

E- Any music review should be embedded in culture and personality. To try and present a technical analysis alone leaves the reader bored stiff and leads to lifeless prose. I feel like that kind of dry academic writing is pretty much relegated to reference books and material for other reviewers to read. My fellow bloggers at CIMTB do a great job of keeping life flowing through the veins of their writing; that's why I continue to write with them. Excellent folk the lot of them.

(His notes on criticism he e-mailed me after the interview. A transcript is here.)

M- And the process? Do you have any rituals?

E- There's no real mystery here. I simply put away distractions, put on some music and start writing. I generally jot down a great deal of notes and impressions and later go back and organize it into some sense of narrative. I never finish a review in one listen. I like to get comfortable with a record before I pass judgment. Goldie has a great bullshit filter so I generally end up with some pretty fucking fantastic music to listen to. That helps.

M- Do you read a lot of other music reviews? Are there any writers in music you admire?

E- I read a great deal of music "reviews". A lot of music bloggers seem to think that posting an MP3 with a sentence qualifies as a review. Horseshit. Said The Gramophone has a wonderful method, it falls somewhere betwixt prose and poetry. The Pop Filter (Rahawa Haile) is one of my favorite folks on the web. His taste and interests are as broad as mine and we have a great deal of fun on Twitter. I'd say that by far my favorite writers are at Crawdaddy. They're the oldest and in my opinion the best of music review and criticism resources there is. Their recent savaging of Weezer is fucking inspirational. I would dare say Gulbransonesque.

M- Just so we're clear; I'm sitting here interviewing myself in a coffee shop. Isn't that a bit insane and kind of an ego trip?

E- Yes, yes it is.

At that he signaled the end of the interview by yelling at me incoherently and demanding a solid gold pool full of coffee to swim in. Writers are a tough interview (I had to get a skin graft after the hot coffee he dumped on me treated me like a batch of dumplings. A small price to pay for the chance to be in his presence.) I hope that I've brought a little more insight into the mind and life of this most essential part of American music discourse.

History will remember him like this, twitching from a near fatal blood/caffeine ratio, fueled by mystical visions of literary immortality and so high on his own ego he can't seem to stop touching himself in public.

'Till next time gentle readers.

oh holy fuck! and no I haven't been drinking... well, okay, yeah, I have... but my point stands...

We just saw Dusty Santamaria at East End.

Oh.
My.
Gawd.

No, seriously. They're fucking AMAZING. And yes I admit I've been drinking, but not enough to be diverted from the Primary Directive: search for a band that hits the trifecta:

(a) I like them
(b) my husband likes them
(c) the crowd likes them

Usually we get at best ONE of three, but in this case... slam dunk! or is it hat trick? Shit, I'm SO not qualified for sports metaphors.

This band makes me want to pepper my sentences with expletives, as in "slam fucking dunk!" and "rock and goddammed fucking roll!"

I went because my guitarist works with two of the guys in the band, it was their first show (!!!!!) and I was sent to find out what the venue was like and if they were any good. So yeah. Venue's fine. Actually, its better than last time I was there (I think it was the Rabbit Hole then, maybe?).

But The band? Holy fuck! I was blown away! This is what rock n' roll is supposed to be.

Husband and I drove home discussing how best to describe them. Surf punk? 50s nuevo-rock? The Mermen covering INXS? Soundtrack to the bastard love child of Jarmusch and Tarentino? Husband said "modern version of The Modern Lovers" which admittedly I had to look up online.

The only link I could find for them was this one from myspace, and awesome as it is, it does not do their live show justice.

Seriously, just go see them.

Menomena to be featured on Huey Lewis tribute!

One of my favorite bands from Portland is Menomena. One of my favorite movies is Back to The Future. On of my favorite bands of all time is Centro-matic. But rest assured dear reader, this is not a just a list of my favorites. These are actually all related. Let me break it down. Menomena is going to be on a Huey Lewis Tribute album. Will Johnson of Centro-matic will also be on the album along with others. Huey Lewis and The News wrote a couple songs for the movie Back to the Future. One of those songs "Back in Time" is covered by Menomena.

Thanks to Stereogum for posting this and bringing it to my attention.

A Weather gets national attenion via SPIN

A Weather is one of my favorite local bands. So when they national press, I get a sense of pride (perhaps irrationally). Portland Pride! Nothing against any of the rest of the NW but Portland is what I rep. Any way the point of this is that spin.com's artist of the day is A Weather. See what they have to say about the band here.

The new album Cove is available for pre-order via Team Love Records.

Were From Japan! New album Title and Track Listing!

The new WFJ! album has been christened, "Now Breathe". Which I think is a great follow up name to "48 minutes 07 seconds". It is as if that whole last album was in anticipation of this album. Or something, I don' know. Here is the track listing I stole from their myspace page:

1. Black Bag Work

2. Bleed

3. Climb Mountain, O Snail

4. There Are Horses In The Streets

5. In Every Hive, A Queen

6. Run Shoot Don't Panic

7. September 13, 1848

What is your favorite song title? Mine is "There are Horses in the Streets".

Image probably created by John Dunn of WFJ!

Ben Meyercord's live music picks for Feb. 12th to Feb. 17th

I saw some music last week. I didn't however get to see Talkdemonic, Starfucker, and Tu Fawning at the Doug Fir. Apparently I was not the only person excited to see them, because it sold out. I was kind of disappointed. Hopefully a lesson was learned.

Also for some strange reason I actually had to work at my job on Sunday and Monday. This never happens. The result of this injustice is that my live picks will actually start on Tuesday this week. So anyway, these are some shows happening in the next six days

Tuesday, Feb 12th

There are a couple of free gigs that are going on in town and one thats not.

  • Every Tuesday at Zilla Sake on Alberta, there is an open mic. Every Tuesday I attend. I have my reasons. I will now narrow them down to three. It is hosted by Y La Bamba which means I get to see her play twice. The people are really great. The curry at Zilla is top notch. Plus I usually play it as Meyercord. The sign up is at 7:30; the music starts at 8 PM.
  • Or if you happen to be down town, you should check out whats happening at Valentine's. The Morals are playing with Train to Nowhere and Randy from Junkface. I always enjoy The Morals live sets (there are no set lists and two drunken guys singing real loud, in a good way). The show is FREE. It starts at 9 PM.
  • Or if you like spending money(who doesn't?), you can head over to the Doug Fir where Baby Dee will be playing with Holocombe Waller. Baby Dee is a trans gendered musician from Cleveland. Holocombe Waller is a local who blurs the lines between theater and performing musician. It should be noted that both out on quite a show. The cost is $10. The show starts at 9PM.
Wednesday, Feb. 13th

Here are some things that I might consider going to if I get out of practice early enough:
  • The Satyricon, which all though it is all ages is usually pretty lame, is actually having a decent show on Wednesday. Though I am not too familiar with any of them I have heard of The Beauty who are playing with Imaginary Airship, Air Fortress, and Dot Matrix. I have also heard of Imaginary Airship. I read that Dot Matrix is kinda like Opera. Should be interesting. The show is $6. The show starts at 8PM.
  • Or if you want to get your groove on, 8-bits of it any way, you can go to the Holocene. Portland based record label Audio Dregs is presenting "8-bit Disco" which features a documentary on chip music music, 8-bit Generation, and performances by Laromlab, Robotcowboy, DJ E*Rock (one of Audio Dregs founders), and B*Retta. All of this for $5. The event starts at 9 PM.
  • Or if you like to eat pizza whilst you listen to people bearing their existence, you can check out Y La Bamba at Mississippi Pizza. She is playing with Andy Combs and the Moth. I highly recommend you check out Y La Bamba. The show is probably by donation. Music starts at 9 PM.
Thursday, Feb. 14th

Thursday is Valentine's day. There are three ways to view this holiday. Valentine's Day is a time to be with that girl or guy non-gender-specific significant other and appreciate them for all that they are for you. Or how you don't have a girl or guy or non-gender-specific significant other and how much you long for that and how your life sucks with out it. Or lastly, how Valentine's is such a joke and how you can't believe how much people buy into the BS that Hallmark has created. Regardless of you views I hope you enjoy your day.
  • Also I am playing a small show as Meyercord at CIMTB contributer Gabriel Darling's practice space along with David Evan and Myrrh Larsen. It should be fun. This comes direct from her myspace:

anti-Valentine’s day singer/songerwriter show on 2/14 pour moi
    Current mood: fabulous

    Semler Building, Suite 411, PDX....
SW 3rd between SW Yamhill and SW Morrison....
    near Borders...

well, Myrrh Larsen, David Evan, and Benjamin Meyercord have confirmed for the Thursday, let's not celebrate coupledom and anti-Valentine's day singer/songwriter mellowness starting at 8PM!!!

FYI, the elevator does not run after 6PM, so, please be aware that you must be able to climb up AND down 4 flights of stairs...
additionally, you need to e-mail me for specific directions: gabriel.darling@gmail.com
(cause I will have to escort you upstairs --- i'm not gonna give you the access codes!) :.P
but please feel welcome to flash me! hahahaha

you are more than welcome to bring a guest or guests..
think we need to be done around 10:45PM with the loud cranking noise fest....
BYOB... of course, a few tasty snackin's might be provided...

Please come celebrate romance, anti-romance, or all the profanities rolled into 1!!!!

    Currently listening :
    The Fashion Focus
    By Starflyer 59
Release date: By 06 October, 1998
Friday, Feb. 15th

So much going on Friday. I cannot decide. I will just provide you the list of shows. Perhaps you can decide for me?
  • Dante's is having a ROCK show featuring Blue Cheer, Danava, and Red Fang. All three bands look like they "bring it". I bet Brandon of AristeiA wishes he was going to this.
  • Maybe country is more your thing. Maybe you like Johnny Cash. I know I do. Well, Ash Street is having a Johnny Cash Tribute night featuring Joshua James & the Runaway Trains, Kate Mann, and Myrrh Larsen. I am not familiar with most of the acts but I know that Myrrh always has interesting interpretations of songs (I believe that he currently has one of Row Row Row Your Boat on his myspace page). It costs $7. Music starts at 9:30 PM.
  • Perhaps you want to help out and attend a benefit show. The Someday Lounge is hosting a benefit show for Ethos Music Center called Cover Your Hearts. This what Someday has to say about Ethos, "Ethos Music is an organization that was established as a direct response to the budget cuts in public schools which limited music education for children. The Ethos mission is that every child has the right to learn and make music. Through Ethos, music education is available on a sliding scale so any child can participate." Sounds pretty good to me. The Charmparticles, Climber, Oh Darling, Curious Jones, Dr. Theopolis, Tango Alpha Tango, Castle, Jonah, Derby, and UHF are playing the show. Tickets are $7-$8. The show starts at 9 PM.
  • Or if you just want to kick it Nopo Style. You can check out the show thats going on at The Waypost. Paige Crater, Saw Whet, Allison Milham, and Dave are playing. I don't know anything about these people except that I really enjoyed what I heard of Saw Whet on her myspace page. The show is FREE. It starts at 8 PM.
  • If you are in NW Portland, you night swing by Slabtown cause Pay The Coyote, Ezra Carey, and Obscure Opus are playing. The first two bands listed I know of indirectly through Westfold (pay the Coyote is a top froend, and Ezra is playing a show with them on the 29th) so they are probably good. The show costs $5. The show starts at 9 PM.
Saturday, Feb. 16th

Locally it is a slow night. You might be tempted to check out Pinback at The Wonder Ballroom, or Bone Thugs at the Roseland though. I however, will probably go the local and cheap route:
  • The Twilight Cafe (1420 SE Powell Blvd) is hosting Magic Johnson (not the basketball player), Pegasus, We Quit, and Dragging an Ox Through Water. As you may be aware we here at CIMTB love us some Draging an Ox so go out and see what we are talking about. The show is FREE. Music starts at 9 PM (?).
Sunday, Feb. 17th

Not a whole lot going on this night either but...
  • Valentine's is having a pretty sweet show. It will feature Aan, Church, and Saw Whet (in case you missed her on Friday). All band are good. The show is FREE which makes it all good. The show starts at 9 PM.
Come out to some of these shows. Support your local bands. Saw hi to me if you see me. And have a good week.

-Ben
