Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks for July 21st and 22nd

Hello Dear Readers

Wednesday is a pretty good day. It is generally my "Saturday". The new Willamette Week comes out. I sleep in until noon or whatever. For the rest of you guys it is "hump day". The rest of the week is down hill from here, right? Good times. And to make things even better, there are shows to got to. Here is what is looking good to me.

Wednesday, July 22nd

On Main St. (Between SW Broadway & Park) there will be a show with Portland Cello Project. It will be part of the The PCPAís Music On Main Street Series. They will have special guest Mirah, Justin Power, Weinland, and maybe more with them, which should be very cool. I have not seen Mirah play in years. I think FREE and in the company of such other notable Portland acts in the special context that is The Portland Cello Project is the perfect way to reintroduce myself to her music. The ALL AGES show is FREE and starts at 5 PM.

Roadside Attraction is having a show with Y La Bamaba and Sean Flinn. I play bass and sing in Y La Bmaba, so I cannot be trusted to have an unbiased opinion. But that being said I think we are pretty good. There are a lot of three part harmonies and accordion, and our singer Luz Elena has probably the best voice in Portland. Sean Flinn is someone who I had not really heard until recently, but he is really good. His song "Patient Heart" has my my list on Jamz for the summer. You may have seen him play guitar in Nick Jaina's band. The show is FREE and starts at 9-ish PM.

Mississippi Studios is having a show with Jackie-O Motherfucker and Dragging an Ox Through Water. There is an $8 cover in advance and $10 at the door. Who likes experimental music? I do. While I cannot make this show, I highly recommend anyone with any interest in interesting music, check i out. Brian Mumford of Dragging an Ox often builds his own noise makers to make his highly experimental folk music. Last time I saw him play he had built an oscillator that incorporated the use of a lit candle. The show starts at 9 PM.

Holocene is having a show with Jared Mees & The Grown Children, Blue Horns, Inside Voices and Pony Village. I am so bummed I am going to miss this show. Jared Mees and his band are really a joy to see. This will be a particularly joyous show as it is the welcome home show for The Grown Children after weeks on the road. Plus Blue Horns are pretty great. I still have not seen Pony Village. The show is $6 and starts at 9 PM.

Berbati's is having Nucular Aminals play as part of their month long Wednesday Residency. Mark Mallman will also be playing this one. Nucular Aminals have a fresh pop sound that would be fun to "move around" to. Mark Mallman has a reputation of putting on a show. I think I have read somewhere that he once performed for over 48 hours. Crazy. The show is FREE and starts at 10 PM.

Thursday, July 23nd

Holocene is having an IPRC Benefit show with:Ah Holly Fam'ly, Arrington de Dionyso (of Old Time Relijun, Alex Wrekk (zinester, Stolen Sharpie Revolution), DJ Vic Alfonzo and Colin Jones. IPRC is the organization that helps make Portland one of the best zine towns in the country. I guess this weekend is also the Zine Symposium. Not to mention that Ah Holly Fam'ly is also pretty cool. I only saw them once, and they were short one member and therefore short one vocal harmony. I feel I might have been jipped. Do not repeat my misfortune. Go see them as the full band. There is a sliding scale for a cover, specifically a suggested $5-$20.

The Waypost is having a show with Andy Moth and the Combs, and Dayton Dean. Andy Combs is a pretty cool. His songs get kinda crazy, he has a lot percussion in the band. When he plays solo he makes heavy use of a looping pedal. I am not at all familiar with Dayton Dean. The ALL AGES show is FREE and starts at 8 PM.

The Red Room is having a show with Little Czar & The Psalmist, Problems? and Crook & Whistle. I remember really ling what I heard of Little Czar & The Psalmist. My friend David Kyle has told me on a number of occasions that he likes the band Problems?. They look to be pretty interesting with their unique take on pop. The show is $3-$5 and starts at 8 PM.

Hotel Deluxe is having a screening of The Wild One. But before that they will have a performance by The Old Believers. I only saw one of these series of summer concert series and it was last year when Eskimo and Sons played before Flight of the Navigator. This is interesting because I think that many of the members of that band currently play with The Old Believers. It will cost you $8. The show starts at 8 PM.

So if you see me at any of these shows, give me a shout out. A "Hi" would suffice, though.

-Ben

Ah Holly Fam'ly in their practice space. I wish that I could see more bands in this setting. In the meantime, I can go to actual venues. The Holocene is having them play on Thursday.

Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks for January 9th to 11th

Hello Dear Readers,

I am so tired. I have not seen any shows. But I am going to try to catch some this weekend. It would appear that I have quite a few amazing ones to choose from. So I will write this blog, get rested and see what I can do to see some local Portland music.

Friday, January 9th

Some tough decisions tonight. Here is what is happening:

  • The Artistery is having a show with Alan Singley and pants machine, Chores, and Travis Wiggins . I have heard that Alan will be performing as a seven peice with viola and sax and female vocals and new drummer , Scott Hayden. I think that this would sourely be worth your while. Chores and Travis Wiggins should put on fun performances as well covering your pop-rock and weird samplin' and etc.. needs respectively. The ALL AGESshow is $6 and starts at 8 PM.
  • Crystal Ballroom is having a Bitch Magazine Benefit: Kimya Dawson (Olympia), Mirah and Anomie Belle (Seattle). In these crazy financial times certain things that we may take for granted (say a certain feminist quarterly magazine) are in financial dire straights. Often Benefit concerts with very entertaining people are held to raise money to save the certain neglected things. This is one of those things. You probably know who these entertainers are but if you don't know who they check them out right now. They are very good. The ALL AGES show is $18-22 and starts 9 PM.
  • If perhaps you fancy yourself an artful person who lives an artful life you might want to check out the Launch Pad Gallery which is having a art opening with a bunch of artists collaborations. The artists participating are: Ennah Snyder and Nikki Jones, Ben Carey and Nathan & Noah Rice, Veranda Haddon and Michelle Purvis, Brent Wear and Jamie Watson, Rick Warren and Charles Daniels. There will also be a film collaboration by Film by: Michelle Tuffias, Sara Robbin and Charles Daniels. The reason I list this event though, is because there will also be music provided by Kaitlyn ni Donovan and Point Juncture, WA. These are both good performers and at the price of FREE, it is hard to say no to this show. The ALL AGES opening opens at 6 PM. The music starts at 9 PM.
  • The Know will be host to the Live from Portland DVD Release this weekend. I am going to go out on a limb and assume that there will be a DVD for sale featuring some really good Portland bands performing live on it. The event will actually last two days and feature many our city's great bands performing from 7 PM to 11 PM. The first night has Leviethan, Weinland, and Sean Flinn and The Squealers. There is a $5 cover both nights. and again starts at 7 PM.

Saturday, January 10th

Another night of tough Choices. I don't think it gets any easier.

  • Doug Fir is having a show with a band that was one of my favorite Portland bands before I even moved here, Quasi. They play rock music in some of its purest forms. While there songs used to be filled with very cynical and amusing lyrics they have lightened up over the years and now occasionally have positive things to sing about too. Eat Skull and The Golden Bears will also be performing sets to round out this all local show. From what I can tell Eat skull make loud lo-fi recordings that seem to beg to be seen live. The Golden Bears make folky music but the two members have been in a lot of bands that you may have heard of that sound quite a bit different Like Electrolettes, Circus Lupus, and Crime in Choir.
  • It is day two of the Live from Portland DVD Release event at The Know. Saturday night will feature: His Name Shall Breathe, Graves, Run On Sentence and Pancake Breakfast (White Salmon, WA). All bands are worth checking out. I am going to try to go to at least one of the nights to pick up the DVD. Again, like the previous night, the show is $5 and starts at 7 PM.
  • Backspace qill be having an awesome show too though. They are having Reporter, Typhoon, Doubledutch and Maggie Morris (San Francisco) play on Saturday night. These are all great bands and performers (a lot of Boy Gorilla related bands), but seriously Typhoon is not to be missed. They really put on some of the most moving and amazing live shows. 9 p.m. $5
  • Berbati's Pan is hosting the Chicharones (Josh Martinez and Sleep) CD release show. I hear that the DJ for Chicharones wears a pig mask. Thats pretty crazy. But the reason I list this show is because it will feature some of the best NW hip-hop currently happening. Performers like Braille, Night Crawlers, Jon the Baptist and Erd are all pretty great. But there is also Raise the Bridges (who rep Hillboro), a rock rap outfit. I don't maybe that's your thing. The show is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The music starts at 10 PM.

Sunday, January 11th

Here are some more shows that you might enjoy.

  • There is another good benefit show happening this weekend. This one is happening at Doug Fir and will help put MusiCares & OHSU Uninsured Patients. This was orignially scheduled as a benefit concert for local musician Kele Goodwin who injured himself and had mad medical bills which were eventually very graciously covered by MusiCares. THis is a way of saying thank you and perhaps raising money to help other musicians who might not have medical insurance. The all-star lineup consists of Musee Mecanique, Sabertooth, Heather Broderick and Ritchie Young of Loch Lomond. If you know anything about these musicians you have probably already made arrangements to get to this show. If you don't know anything about these people, now would be a charitable time to "discover" them. The cover is a sliding scale of $10-15. The show starts at 9 PM.
  • Valentine's is having a The Flight & The Fall show with Root Beer & French Fry and The Wedding Singers also performing. So what the heck is The Flight and The Fall? Well, its a variety show? This is what I found from the Mercury's site. It looks pretty interesting, plus Root Beer and French Fry are really good. This show is FREE and starts at 9 PM.
  • 220 House is having a show with The Hugs , Meth Teeth, Best Supporting Actress, Chrome Wings . These are some good bands. And everyone knows nothing can beat a good house show. So if it is good music in a loud and intimate setting that you crave, I suggest you attend this show. I am unsure of a cover, but the show is set to begin at 8 PM.

So that is what is happening this weekend, show-wise. If you see me at any of these please say "Hi".

-Ben

Mirah to perform for all you bitches (and Bitch magazine) tonight at Crystal Ballroom.

PDX Pop Now! 2008 related show Tonite!

So there is a last minute show happening at Rontoms tonight. I think maybe you should go? I'm gonna go.
  • It will feature the music of Nick Cacares and Y La Bamba. Both do variations of folk. The fun and exciting kind, not slow and boring (though I like that kind too). Its just a fun show that the PDX Pop Now! 2008 folks thought you might be interested in. It is basiclaly to introduce you to some local Portland musicians that maybe you not familiar with. I know that Both Nick Cacares and Y La Bamba are on the PDX Pop Now! 2008 CD. I also know for a fact that Y La Bamba is playing the actual festival which takes place July 25 to July 27th at Rotture. But again, this post is about Rontoms tonight at 8 PM. This show is FREE.

Does PC-PDX know punk rock?

You be the judge. Talk amongst yourself.

The following is directly from PC-PDX with love and reposted with permission:

Punk Rock isn't a website or MUSIC or anything else but community and something close to a way of thinking. Punk is the ability to think for yourself and realizing that you don't have to accept the crap that's fed to you. Punk is the reasoning that you can make you own choices and that you can make it happen for yourself (DIY) and those around you (DIT!). Punk is about accepting and creating something new.
Whille PR is music, Punk is freedom, liberation of the mind from garbage that people give you. The music is one of many ways we express ourselves in this manor, but, there is much more then just the music.

When i talk about music it's THE music, not a style.

As far as the website goes..

It's not MY website, It's always referred to as THE Guide and it's operations are ALWAYS a 'WE', because it's about the musical community and building that community.
I don't give a shit about google hits either. It doesn't rate as a ego boost to me. I do state this stuff because i'm trying to communicate that people want this info but can't get it from anywhere else. People are interested, and this site is the somehow they use to get the info. In case you aren't aware, this scene that we are in now, amazing as it is, is very clicky and very exclusionary - which is the farthest thing from punk. Those are two adjectives which mean the opposite of punk. As awesome as the Portland PR scene is, it's difficult to get into because people are, knowingly or not, very exclusionary about letting outsiders in and that sucks.

The website is not a business, there never has been and NEVER will be one ad. I reap no benefit, the only benefit anyone receives is that we have a stronger scene.

If we really want to get into business and show promotion, and just how much "punk" kids hate business, let's all sit down and ask how we think it's acceptable to promote shows on myspace. Myspace; A cooperate entity withheld by Rupert Murdoch and Fox News. -How many ads a day do you see while posting flyers on your friends myspaces. -How "punk" is that? -How much money are they making off you -right now-?
How many NEW people do you reach by posting bulletins to people that have already added you to their friends?

We're never going to get anywhere if we can't communicate and build this scene for ourselves. There sure as hell isn't anybody else going to do it for us. The scene is what -we- make it, let work together and make it something good.

Being Punk doesn't mean you have to fight innovation and new ways of doing things. The whole purpose and birth of 'Punk' is about fighting the crap of the old, thinking for ourselves and starting something new that we control, something for us by us because we know we are smarter than the crap that they're feeding us.

Be open to innovation and ideas,
we are all in this for the music and the community that comes from this amazing scene we've all built together. This scene, right now, is on the brink of something huge and revolutionary. Think NY '77, DC '82 ... I've never seen anything anywhere, in all the places i've been throughout the states, like the amazing scene that Portland has right now. I know you're playing your part... we're doing ours. Let's Do It Together (DIT!) and make this something grand.

Much Love Portland, PC-PDX, all of us.

I don't care. I like it when anyone anywhere talks about revolution. I like it when anyone anywhere talks real talk (thanks V. for my new favorite played out phrase for 2008 hugs). -- Ste. Goldie

Chrome Wings This Week

Hey there, faithful CIMTB readers - remember back in January when I told you about one of my favourite Portland bands, Chrome Wings? (You forgot?!? I forgive you. click here.) Anyhow, my story's short and sweet, and the moral is, you have no excuse not to see them, because they're playing tomorrow night at the Chaos Cafe, 2620 SE Division. (I'm pretty sure it's all ages, early show.) They're also playing a north Portland house party on Saturday, but I don't have the address. (It might be a small-scale affair) and have dates coming up in March and April. Come on down and show some love!

Ben Meyercord's Live Music picks for Dec. 10th-16th

It just doesn't get easier does it. Another week full of great shows, and therefore another blog post detailing them.

Hello Portland and areas surrounding Portland this is what is going down, show wise, this week:

Monday, December 10th

There isn't too much going on at the start of the week but there is this...

Tuesday, December 11th

like I said not too much going down at the beginning of the week, but check out either of these open-mics as there have been glimpses of brilliance at both. I have also been known to perform as Meyercord at both (not that there is a correlation between this sentence and the previous sentence).

  • The Incubator is hosted by my good friend and apparent fellow Crappy Indie Music blogger Gabriel Darling. This goes down at the Someday Lounge. The cool thing about these besides the great sound and stage and people, is that every performance is recorded so and archived on the Someday Lounge website for later viewing. Starts at 9pm (free).
  • There is also the Open-mic Night over at Zilla's Sake on Alberta. This is usually hosted by my friend Elena Mendoza aka Y La Bamba (in my opinion one of the most talented people making music in Portland right now). The room is small but the sound is very warm thanks in large to a gentleman who calls himself E (not to be confused with the lead singer of Eels). He records this musical gathering every Tuesday and makes them available via the Open Mic Scout Podcast. Starts at 8pm (free).
Wednesday, December 12th

Today I am playing a show in the band AristeiA along with Jon Garcia and The Charmparticles at the Doug Fir so you know where I will be (and where you should be as well). But in the interest of being fair, the following shows are going on too.

Thursday, December 13th

This is where it gets tough. There are three shows. I wish to be at all of them.
  • Tu Fawning (featuring Joe Haege of 31 Knots and Corrina Repp) is playing with The Golden Bears, and some band called Baby Dollars are all playing the Holocene. The show starts at 9pm ($7). I have regrettably missed Tu Fawning play every single time they have played. This might be another time because...
  • Peter Broderick is playing with Ethan Rose at The Mississippi Studios. This is a rare treat as Peter has until further notice relocated from Portland to Copenhagen, Denmark. Don't miss you chance to see him and get his new cd without all of those oversea shipping charges. Show starts at 8pm ($8/$10).
  • And over by PGE Park, Nate Ashley and The Liminal Sea are playing with The Graves and "a very special, secret guest" at the Towne Lounge. It sounds interesting. Doors at 9pm ($5?).
Friday, December 14th

I will be out of town playing a show with Nire in Hood River as Meyercord (if you have friends in Hood River, send them to The Horse and the Hound on Friday) so I won't be able to see these but...
Saturday, December 15th

There are a couple of good ones. You would do right by me by attending any of these

Sunday, December 16th

I will most likely go to this show
  • Modernstate is playing over at the Holocene with Autopilot is for Lovers and Sarah Winchester (of A Weather fame). If I remember correctly he/they put on a pretty fun live show. And besides it being a good line-up, it is a benefit for local musician, Lou Thomas (also of A Weather). See the holocene page for all the details. Show starts at 9pm ($8).
You may recall that in my last post I readily admitted that I would not get to all of the shows I listed. I had no idea how right I was. I only made it to two of the listed ten. Let's see how I do this week.

Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks For This Week

Damn my inability to be everywhere at once!

There are too many shows in Portland.

If I could I would be at two or three show every night. Unfortunately I have a lack of money and time. Plus my body tends to slow down and eventually fall asleep on me. But I guess the question is, "is that a bad thing?" It depends I suppose.

So I guess what I am getting at is this:

Wednesday December 5th, 2007

Thursday December 6th, 2007
  • Portland Cello Project playing again at the Holocene with the Horse Feathers and Fall of Snow. (No you are not crazy, it is the exactly the same line up as last night. Which can be a good thing. You have two chances to see it.)
  • But at the same time there is The Graves and Boat playing over at the Doug Fir. Sigh.

Friday December 7th, 2007

Saturday December 8th, 2007:

  • Saturday is easy. I want to go to the Doug Fir to see Laura Gibson who is playing a show with the Cave Singers. I have missed both of these peoples last shows and regretted it. Something that I plan to rectify this Saturday.

Sunday December 9th, 2007:

  • Sunday an old acquaintance from Denton, TX, Fishboy is playing a show at Slabtown. So if I am in the mood for some indiepop opera I might go check that out.

But alas I do believe that I will be unable to attend the majority of these excellent shows because my wallet is just not fat enough. But you should try to. I figure that if we put our minds to it we can make sure that every good show is attended.
