Question of the Week: Minor Postings VI

Remember in spring of 2008 when the infamous bureaucrats at the OLCC approved changes to their minor posting rules, making it somewhat easier for venues that serve alcohol to also host all ages shows? That was an awesome victory for Portland music, and due to a lot of effort put forth by musicians, show-goers, Carey Clarke and other folks at PDX Pop Now!, and the Musicians' Union.

So, I've been out of town for a while, and am a bit detached from new Portland music goings-on, and I haven't been able to find much from a half-assed google search, and was wondering if anyone has noticed any changes due to the more lenient minor posting rules. Are more venues taking advantage of this?

I think it's a good idea to keep looking at this issue, see if the changes are making a noticeable difference, or if perhaps there's more that could be done to promote the expansion of all ages shows in a fashion that's profitable and practical for local businesses. I have noticed that Backspace serves beer now, which should cut down on folks walking out on shows to get a drinks at a nearby bar, and probably significantly benefits their bottom line. Have any of you PDX music-savvy folks noticed any other changes since the ruling? Are there are any new all ages venues, shows, or better attendance at venues that already had all ages shows, but can now serve alcohol?

Re: Ben Meyercord's live picks for Saturday 19th aka Rererato Not Closed!

Hello dear reader,

I just received an email from The Online Romance (I am on their email list). In the email I read two very good things that I would like to share with everyone.

  1. Rererato is not closed despite the recent press.

  2. The Online Romance is playing on Saturday for Rererato's Greand re-Opening!

There are two other bands playing as well, Whispering Pines, and The Rainy States (Southern Belle will not be playing despite what Rererato's website might indicate). The show is $4 and is ALL AGES. There will also be a gallery of art by the owners of the space Adam Keller and Stephanie Simek. It all starts at 7 PM sharp. This because they only have until 10 PM to have shows.

Okay. See you later,

Ben

Chrome Wings This Week

Hey there, faithful CIMTB readers - remember back in January when I told you about one of my favourite Portland bands, Chrome Wings? (You forgot?!? I forgive you. click here.) Anyhow, my story's short and sweet, and the moral is, you have no excuse not to see them, because they're playing tomorrow night at the Chaos Cafe, 2620 SE Division. (I'm pretty sure it's all ages, early show.) They're also playing a north Portland house party on Saturday, but I don't have the address. (It might be a small-scale affair) and have dates coming up in March and April. Come on down and show some love!

IMPORTANT OLCC INFO!

Remember the OLCC letter witting campaign from last fall and the possibility of opening up some of the venues to be able to serve the All Ages music community? Well it failed with a vote of 3-2 against accepting the amendments that would allow for such a change. The counsel did however say they would be open to another round of discussion about the changes. They way they voted pretty mush stated "We don't understand us now, so we';ll vote no to look professional since everybody is watching. Get back to us in a bit when we can look it over again." Well, that time is now!

This is a very big opportunity to allow for an expansion of All Ages rights in the musical community so we need to do all we can to ensure that this happens.

Unfortunately, all of the -hundreds & hundreds- of letters that were sent in during the last round cannot be taken into consideration this time around. Please take a few minutes and show your support for the right of accessible music for everybody.

STEP #1: Educate yourself and the issue! Cary Clarke, Local Musicians 99, PC-PDX and StumpClub.org will be posting all the info and developments over the next few months. None of the New proposed changes are publicly posted other than paper form, we will let you know as soon as these are available electronically.

Step #2: Once you have a solid opinion and strong + smart argument, write the commission and let them know what you think about the changes. Every bit of input will help. (we'll post the address' along with the proposals as soon as they are released!)

I know a lot of you were disappointed the last time round because of the inability to become part of the face to face process by attending the public meetings + hearings. It does suck that all the meetings are scheduled in such an inconvenient area of town and during school hours. We're looking into the possibility of having a meeting with the -voting commissioners- in a centralized location (like Backspace) so that they may directly hear your concerns and passion for this issue. Note that the meetings at OLCC headquarters are with the commissioners staff members and they are all pretty much on board with this idea. They are also the ones that receive your letters so even if you cannot attend any of the public meetings with the staff, your letters are -equally important- and the medium by which you contact them is no less important than another.

There will be a lot of great people and organizations working on ensuring the success of these proposed changes. This process needs all the support we can give -let's shine the public spotlight on the OLCC, let them know we care about this issue and that people are watching and that they should make the right choice this time.

Keep tuned as we will be posting the info on any and all developments between now and the final vote mid April.

ACTION ALERT! ALL POINTS BULLETIN

REPOST:

Heya-

Just wanted to remind everyone that Tuesday, November 13 at 5pm is the deadline for submitting feedback to the OLCC about their proposed rule changes that would allow music venues and other art spaces to admit minors and still sell alcohol (i.e. stay in business). Send your emails in support of the changes to:
jennifer.huntsman@state.or.us

For more information on this issue, or to see a sample email, check out:
http://www.pdxpopnow.com/olcc

Opening more music and cultural events to people under 21 is the right thing to do for young people, local musicians, venues, and our community as a whole.

These emails will play an absolutely critical role in the OLCC's ultimate decision to adopt or reject the proposed changes, so take a minute to write in today.

Best,

Cary Clarke
