Diggedy DUNES EFX

reading is a very fresh way to learn

Just a quick reminder I'll be spinning some records (Jib Kidder, Ghostface, Del, Eyedea & Abilities, RUN DMC, MF Doom, etc.) in between acts @ Dunes Friday night for Travis Wiggins CD release.

Also super psyched for Dismal City's own Sleepyhead who also has a new record out. I hope he brings some copies for sale, because I have yet to cop one. He's also going to be performing with his cousin Jeff on bass which should be sweet.

Rounding out the bill is my homie David aka Tacodrum aka Papi aka paper/upper/cuts who, in addition to having more nom de plumes than Method Man, is rushing over to the spot after playing a gig earlier in the evening with Secret Powers @ The Artistery.
Been looking forward to this show for quite a while. Holla back surgery.

Ben Meyercord's Live Music Pi cks for October 20th to 23rd

Hello Dear Readers,

I am back in full effect. There are shows that need going to. You want help out our local scene yes? Then go to some of these here shows:

Monday, October 20th

Here whats the haps.

Valentine's is having an awesome performance by Rush-N-Disco, Angela Fail, and Joe Von Appen. I have seen both RND and Joe Von Appen before and really enjoyed their performance based pieces. I mean its funny and good. A rare combo. And since its probably FREE, why not go? It starts at 9 PM.

Rererato is hosting a show with Lake (Olymopia), Desolation Wilderness (Olympia), Arrington de Dionyso (of Old Time Relijun), and Dual Diangnosis. Lake makes exceptional indie-pop. Desolation Wilderness makes good ambient pop. Arington de Dionyso does what he does. And Dual Diagnosis does what I believe is free jazz? Please correct me if I am wrong. This show is probably a $4 donation. Also Reretato is closing, for good, next month, so go see what a nice little venue it is before its gone.0 It is ALL AGES and starts at 7 PM.

The Tube is having a show featuring Usaisafuckingmonster (Brooklyn), Fist Fite, and Miami Nights. This should be a high energy show in a small place. So if you like that sort of thing, you will be in heaven. I personally have to be in the mood, but who knows. I just might be in the mood tonight. The show starts at 9:30 PM (there is no cover listed).

Tuesday, October 21st

There are some really good shows for Tuesday.

Camp Rainbow (house at 604 N Beech St. Portland OR, 97227) is having a bit of a repeat of Rererao's Monday night show, Lake and Desolation Wilderness (both from Olympia), but with some really good local bonus bands. These bands are the amazing World's Greatest Ghosts, The Old Beleivers, and Breakfast Mountain. This is an amazing line up. For REAL. It is ALL AGES and the cost is whatever you can donate for the touring bands. It doesn't get much better than that. The show starts at 8 PM.

Backspace is also having an amazing show with the Evangelicals (OK) and locals Parenthetical Girls, and Blue Horns. I have seen both local acts and would love to see both again. Especially the Parenthetical Girls who have a new album out entitled Entanglements. Plus I have heard nothing but good things about Evangelists. This ALL AGES show is $7 and starts at 9 PM.

There is a show that I am kinda interested happening at Valentine's as well on Tuesday. This one wil have Flaspar, 40 Hundred Thousand Locked Up Guns, and Trust. I believe I have seen 40 Hundred Thousand Locked Up Guns before and they were good. But I am just really really curious about Flaspar. I have seen their name so much. It seem slike something I might like. Any way, this show is FREE and starts at 9 PM.

Wednesday, October 22nd

These shows spiked my interest.

Every Wednesday in October, the Laurelthirst Public House is having Two Beer Veirs in which Laura Veirs (with Chris Funk and Annalis Tornfelt) play old timey country songs. Anyway it should be really good and there aren't that many Wednesdays left in October (two), so check it out. It is FREE and starts at 6 PM.

Dunes is having a show as part of the Tight Hug series (I have no information on this series)which will feature White Fang and Fleshtone. Both these bands put on very entertaining live performances. Fleshtone has all these scantily clad dances and such. White Fang has a bunch of hyped up teenage boys. It should be a load of fun. Rumour has it that Breakfast Mountain will also be playing. This show will happen at night (sometime after 8 PM).

Holocene is having a show that I would be remiss if I didn't mention. Arrington de Dionyso (of Old Time Relijun), Rollerball and Ghosties will be playing this one. I have been meaning to catch Rollerball ever since Goldie starting going crazy about them a while back. Unlike his performace ealier in the week Arrington will have NYC dancer Melinda Allen performing with him on Wednesday. This show is $5 and starts at 9 PM.

Thursday, October 23rd

A few shows to go to:

Holocene is having a show with Chris Robley, Nick Jaina, These United States, and Vandaveer. This is being billed as a folk rock line up. But be warned the folk rock spectrum is wide (there might even be some "electric guitars"). The show is $7 and starts at 8:30 PM.

There is also a performance by Audie Darling happening at the Camellia Lounge. I saw her play at Valentine's last Sunday and had a good time. Hey its FREE. The show starts at 9 PM.

So if you see me at any of these shows, do not hesitate to come and say "Hi".

-Ben

The Old Believers (not looking that old in this picture) play Camp Rainbow on Tuesday.

Ben Meyrecord's Live Music Picks for October 19th

Hello Dear Readers,

I am back. And I just noticed that I have been back for almost a week. I have already missed quite a few shows. Damn. Anyway today there are some more shows I might miss as well. Or maybe not? Tell you what, why don't you go to one of these shows and find out if I'm there.

Sunday, October 19th

I got four shows to list for you.

Valentine's is having a wonder full line up of a bunch of a good ol' local acoustic based songwriting folks in the form of Love Menu, Jacob White, and Audie Darling. I have played with and seen Love Menu a few times now and like what I have heard of her well arranged folk pop songs (I haven't picked up her Dub Narcotic recorded CD yet, but there is always tonight). Jacob White seems to be a very promising Portland talent. I would keep my eye on him. I have played with Audie Darling once but it was a criminally short set. Hopefully this one is longer. This show will start at 9 PM and is FREE.

There also a FREE show at Rontoms. They do free shows on Sunday nights pretty frequently as does Valentine's. So if you are ever hankerin' for a free show on a Sunday night, I suggest checking out either of these fine establishments. Tonight Rontom's has local Jazz out fit Blue Cranes doing a set following local Bacharachian popster Alan Singley and his Pants Machine. Rumour have it that his pants machine has gotten quite large (i.e. more members) I would say it is well worth you $0. This show starts at 9:30 PM.

Some of you may or may not (I was not) be aware of Epanded Frames, "celebration and examination of critical cinema past, present, and future." that has been going on for the past several days here in Portland. But if you are not aware, they are having a closing night party at The Cleaners (part of the Ace Hotel) with some of our local music talent providing the entertainment. Evolutionary Jass Band, Tara Jane O'Neil, and Sad Horse. Evolutionary Jass Band is probably the my favorite Jass Band in town. TJO makes beautiful music that is part folkish (with electric guitar) part experimental (lots of looping and such) with out really sound too much like either. Sad Horse are a local two piece that play loud, fast and consice rock music. All the Proceeds go to Cinema Project. The show is $10 (or free if you have a ticket stub of a Expanded Frame event) and starts at 10:30 PM.

Doug Fir is having a show with Seattle's Say Hi (formerly, named Say Hi to Your Mom) tonight. I think that this band has some good songs, and a lot of okay songs. The main reason I mention this show is that local "they will be huge" band Hockey is opening. If you have not seen or heard Hockey this is your chance to do so. You will not regret it (unless of course you hate fun). This show is $10 and starts at 9 PM.

So seriously any of these shows will do you good.

-Ben

the next INCUBATOR (a super dope Open Mic at Someday Lounge) set for Tuesday October 14th, 2008

Someday Incubator: Experimental to conventional theatrical and musical performers shall each have their moment to woo the audience and wow the world. The stage is open to vanity and variety, to the ethereal and the edgy. Boldness and brazenness is encouraged to take the stage. Adaptations, permutations, accelerations, and a diverse range of thrills, chills and spills nurtured in the recesses and corners shall be stripped from their crevices to razzle dazzle. Bring something provocative....reveal your creative efforts by candlelight or by stage light....reveal and revel in hatching your visions....

You know you have friends who are scandalous, jocular, peculiar, out of this world, restless, facetious, closet extroverts who are in need of a stage! Please tell them to contact me! There still slot's available. Walk-in's are welcome, however, those who are serious about playing please sign up by email before October 14th.

saintgoldie@gmail.com

This will be my first official time hosting Incubator. I will be there at 8pm. I hope you can show the love and stop by for a drinkie-poo or snacky. As always, Ryan Olson of Synchronicity Frequency is the sound guy! He will make everyone sound beautiful!

Octobus Prime/Semester @ Sea

rocktober

What up homies? How you livin'? Fat like thanksgiving?*

Wow. October. I think my favorite month out of the whole 12.. But not just because I read way too much O*G* freedom thought/best thought type cats at such a young age.

Scratch that, that's probably a big reason after all. & et al.

PS Holla @ Sun RA and Jib Kidder and the whole crew in Narwhal vs. Narwhal for lockin' it down in my life lately. "I ain't mad at ya."

Oh yeah, and Rob Walmart too......

*previous questions were intended as being rhetorical in nature. so, therefore, no response is necessary.
