FREE SHOW/BEER this Friday September 23rd

“Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you do criticize him, you’ll be a mile away and have his shoes. “

An unknown wise man said that, and since 2007 the good people at Crappy Indie Music: The Blog have been… um… stealing your shoes. Now is the time for them to show off, and three musical projects from our bloggers will be rocking The Old Church on September 23rd.

The lineup:
Doctor Something and the Pipin’ Hot Love Engines, post electric/folk about science (Dr. Something) http://www.myspace.com/drsomething
Evil Doer, heavy metal party trio (saintgoldie aka Goldie Davich)http://www.myspace.com/evildoerpdx
Goddammit One Of Us Will Be Drunk, acoustic dirty duo from Coeur Machant(Jess Gulbranson ) http://www.last.fm/music/Coeur+Machant

followed by a very special Crappy Indie Music Bloggers supergroup!

A few words on the venue:

The Old Church is a cute church — not overly ornate or fancy. The stained glass is simple. The first time I walked in I felt a sense of reverence, which was tempered quickly enough with the overwhelming and exciting feeling of the historic value and importance of this Portland landmark.
I love to walk around and whistle. The reverb in the empty rooms is intoxicating, so full-sounding. I blow the air into a giant set of lungs, filling it up with little breaths that turn into mighty ‘ooooos.’ I am excited to take an old church and turn it into a place to worship new music. A classical setting for contemporary stuff. Irreverent, modern and fun music and performances against the back drop of a pipe organ. The idea of sitting down at an early show, in a building whose design supports good sound (it’s a giant amp), is appealing not just to me but everyone I’ve talked to about this project. I can’t imagine a better place to book shows. Goldie Presents is thrilled to open the doors to new artists and a new generation of worshippers of Portland’s creative output. -Goldie Presents

Read between the lines: Band Bio

This is an example of when a publicist has to apologize for the unlikable personality of a musician and can only rely upon a weak and arrogant comparison to two, somewhat sympathetic, fictional assholes recognized by hipsters and the literate alike.

The following is a REAL band bio:

______________ is an alt-folk bandleader from ______________ , and his is the story of one man's willingness to be obsessed at his own risk. He is a fine writer of prose and if it weren't for his infatuation with music and performing he'd probably be sitting up in his room churning out novels instead of songs. His band, featuring members of __________ is the result of five albums worth of playing in the streets, touring, sometimes living hungry, and sometimes selling out shows to the ravenous fans who've found them.

From his high concept records to his busking in front of national monuments and his tours in Finland, Alaska and everywhere in the continental United States, _____ loves to experiment, but he's suffered for it. He has run out of money, slept in his car, booked tours from the road, and
sacrificed relationships at home for the good of his art. The result is an incredible talent, live show, and band unparalleled in _______ . On tour they often play two shows, one in the club they were booked and one in the street to boost attendance and sell a few records. At the end of the day though all of this patience and dedication has made _____ sort of a loner, conflicted and uneasy, like captain Ahab at the end of the bar, the white whale tugging at the back of his mind. But like Hank Chinaski said in barfly: "No writer who wrote worth a damn wrote in peace."

I am a dick and I play music.

Starting a conversation: Women in the Music Industry

Hi.

So here's the deal. I am angry. I can't go into it now. By posting this blog I am hoping to attract people who have an opinion about how women are treated differently than men in the music industry.

Point of contention:

Portland is a progressive city. Yeah. Not really when it come to women in the music community.

I am searching for more women bloggers to contribute to Crappy Indie Music. Your voice is valuable and much needed.

MORE LATER!

Call of the Yeti

Anything involving 'Yeti' is indie right.

I LOVE all of the songs that come out of The Mighty Boosh. This one in particular hit home. I identify with Howard and his hippy cult self Parsley. How peaceful he looks when he doesn't need his friends or family!

Sing along:

follow me
forget the world
look around at the wonderness of nature
never fear
everything is here
and you don't need your friends or family
we're your family
come with me and then you will see
everything you need within life
hey ho it's easy letting go
when nothing before was real
look into our eyes
you can see the future
look into our eyes
we can see your soul
we will be together
everything is good here
listen to your heart
everything is good here
nothing before was real
never fear
everything is here
and you don't need your friends or family
hey ho it's easy letting go
we're your family
we're your family
look into our eyes
you can see the future
look into our eyes
we can see your soul
hey ho it's easy letting go
when nothing before was real
listen to your heart
everything is good here

AristeiA: new drummer and new recordings

AristeiA drummer Devon Shirley in studio with Adam Steinfink at Toadhouse

I have listened to the rough tracks of AristeiA's most recent recordings. I hear a subtle, powerful new movement forward towards a signature sound. This movement is driven by the drums.

They are coming over this afternoon to listen and make notes for the mixing and shiz. I love watching the process of writing and recording music. It's so not hum-drum. Anyway maybe I will try my hand at a REAL review when it's all finished.

That's all for now. Baby blogs back into the blog of things.

What's a Portland hipster?

From the site Portland Hipster:

DEFINTION OF HIPSTER?
Webster's definition: Hip-ster (-ster) n. [Slang]
1. a hip person, esp. a devote of modern jazz
2. same as BEATNIK: a term of the 1950's and early 1960's: cf. HIPPIE

Wikepedias definition: Those individuals devoted to retro fashions, independent music and film, "alternative comics", and other forms of expression that are popular in hipster subculture. The term is sometimes used as a blanket descriptor for fans of indie rock music. More generally, trendsetter's in fashion are sometimes called hipsters.

Hipsters Handbook definition: One who possesses tastes, social attitudes, and opinions deemed cool by the cool. (Note: it is no longer recommended that one use the term "cool"; a Hipster would instead say "deck.") The Hipster walks among the masses in daily life but is not a part of them and shuns or reduces to kitsch anything held dear by the mainstream. A Hipster ideally possesses no more than 2% body fat.

Portlandhipsters.com definition:
Non-individuals clone posers fucks with low-self esteem and cocky attitudes who try to look the look (ironic t-shirts, super tight pants, converse, truckerhat) but don't walk the walk (being actual musicians).

13-year-old to swap his iPod for a Walkman

Monday, 29 June 2009 11:10 UK
Giving up my iPod for a Walkman

When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.

My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day.

He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realized he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.

When I saw it for the first time, its colour also struck me. Nowadays gadgets come in a rainbow of colours but this was only one shade - a bland grey. read more...
