DEFINTION OF HIPSTER?
Webster's definition: Hip-ster (-ster) n. [Slang]
1. a hip person, esp. a devote of modern jazz
2. same as BEATNIK: a term of the 1950's and early 1960's: cf. HIPPIE
Wikepedias definition: Those individuals devoted to retro fashions, independent music and film, "alternative comics", and other forms of expression that are popular in hipster subculture. The term is sometimes used as a blanket descriptor for fans of indie rock music. More generally, trendsetter's in fashion are sometimes called hipsters.
Hipsters Handbook definition: One who possesses tastes, social attitudes, and opinions deemed cool by the cool. (Note: it is no longer recommended that one use the term "cool"; a Hipster would instead say "deck.") The Hipster walks among the masses in daily life but is not a part of them and shuns or reduces to kitsch anything held dear by the mainstream. A Hipster ideally possesses no more than 2% body fat.
Portlandhipsters.com definition: Non-individuals clone posers fucks with low-self esteem and cocky attitudes who try to look the look (ironic t-shirts, super tight pants, converse, truckerhat) but don't walk the walk (being actual musicians).

Haha! Small world. That's my boy Paul Lynch's site. Lived next door to him for almost 5 years. He did a lot of the early graphic design for Lucky Madison and designed the logo and the website. Anyway, that's him on the title page with the 'stache.
ReplyDeleteI also see he used an old picture of me for hipster #5! Not sure if should be embarrassed or flattered.
Lastly, I read somewhere recently that the definition of hipster is someone younger than you who is more fashionable in their music/clothes selection than you. Not sure I completely agree. Anyway, thanks for sparking something in my brain. I could write a whole post about the this subject, and now probably will.
Almost forgot....
ReplyDeleteMy favorite (sorry Paul) blog making fun of/yet oddly somehow celebrating hipsters:

I think this article sums up my feelings quite nicely. Especially the last sentence "As we are forced to consume less, as mass chain stores and restaurants close, and as the nation makes a concerted effort to become more "green," we seem to be heading in a direction that hipsters might like. Now maybe they can stop complaining and do something worthwhile for society."
