Kid Tyger's Photo/Video Journalism: PDX Pop Now! kick off at City Hall.

pdx pop 09

This is what it looked like when I first got there.

Seriously. Kind of looks familiar. Y La Bamba had just finished their soundcheck and I believe the drummer had to re-park his vehicle prior to the full set starting, so I decided to roll down the block for a quick beer and some air-conditioning as a brief respite from the heat.

Photobucket
Indeed.

Photobucket
*drinks ipa faster than normally would so as not to miss Y La Bamba*

pdx pop city hall y la bamba

By the time I rushed back to City Hall Y La Bamba was already playing, but according to a friend I ran into it was only the beginning of their 2nd song of the set. I perched upon the stone railing. That is - stood up on the thing you see both in the first picture of this post as well as the first picture in Goldie's previous post, to get a higher vantage shot of the crowd and possibly a good way to catch the entire stage on video.

wackenhut 1

Wackenhut wasn't having it.

wackenhut 2

Seriously, I did not make this up! Q: Where do you work? A: Wackenhut!

Photobucket

This lady in particular Was. Not. Feeling. Me. The feeling was mutual. In retrospect I place some blame on myself. These security people were just trying to do their job and get through a day of work without any hassles like everybody else. I am usually a very peaceful and understanding person although I sometimes have beef with authority figures that use their position of power to enforce, in my humble opinion, meaningless rules. That kind of sounds like a weird Facebook quiz result, "You are usually a peaceful and understanding person, although you sometimes have beef with authority figures that use their position of power to enforce, in your humble opinion, meaningless rules." Whatever though, I've since learned from my younger days that the judicial branch of government doesn't quite see eye to eye with me on that. So my older wiser self said, you got to get. That. Dirt off your shoulder. Take a walk around the block, cool off, and make sure you don't miss getting some Y La Bamba video footage. And luckily I didn't.

Kinda bummed I missed more of the set than I wanted to, and wasn't able to get the full band on video. But also glad to get up even closer than I would've otherwise and get what I got. Also for the rest of the night I wasn't as uptight about capturing as much as possible like I usually do. Briefly had a conversation with my boy Michael Mannheimer upon leaving about this. It was too nice of a day and a vibe to stress getting footage at the expense of having a good time. So instead I hung with some homies I hadn't seen in awhile and still managed to get some decent video. Here's a little PJ, WA....

Good friends, or at least good acquaintances with this whole crew from way back. Helped them put out their first EP back in the day and my boy Skyler Norwood is, even though someone I don't see very often these days, a dear dear friend from way back who has helped me and Lucky Madison out in innumerable ways. So, good to catch their set and they seemed pretty tight and a little more "rock" than I'd seen them in the past after recently coming off the tour with the Thermals.

Lastly was YACHT who I was psyched to see, and I think most people there were too. As evidenced by the masses swarming the stage as soon as they appeared. Although, I'm not gonna lie, there was definitely a small but strong contingent of people I talked to who were passive-aggressively dismissing them because of their live set-up including new technology rather than just old school instruments.

To which I officially call bullshit on right here and now. "That's not REAL music". Give me a break. That's what the Sinatra lovers said about Elvis/Beatles. That's what the Baby-Boomers said about Hip-Hop. That's what 80's Satriani-worshipping guitar shop assholes said about The Ramones. That's what the Washington Post says about non-classical music virtuosos. I know from experience that running DI's and dealing with backing tracks live is twice as hard as plugging into amps and just rocking out. But I'll save that diatribe for another time. Particularly since some of the lyrics of this YACHT song I caught on video is as succinct response to the naysayers as any I could have come up with on my own....

"No I won't be your slave. No matter how much I'm paid. Your darkness will catch up with you and you will not escape. No I don't want to fight [wackenhut]. 'Cause you're not worth my time. And you can only put up with so much [stuff] in this life."

Looking forward to the PDX-POP Now Fest next weekend. Holla back surgery.

PDX-POP @ City Hall

In case you missed it, the PDX-POP kickoff at City Hall was a blast. I'm currently uploading videos and will have a full report posted tomorrow, but in the meantime here are some pictures I took. First the Glisan bus poetry and the rest at the actual event....

I can't speak to the "enhut" part, but she was Wack indeed. All in all a great time was had nonetheless. Soon......

"Heart to Elk" the next "Goya"? PJWA the next Grenadine?

You have to know people.

I didn't realize it, but Point Juncture WA's new album wasn't out yet when it was pressed into my hands Sunday by their erstwhile web designer, R. Niswonger. He didn't realize that I was writing for this fine blogging establishment at the time either, so there is a purity to the exchange... just a couple of friends and the gift of music. "Heart To Elk" is available today, on CD at least. You'll have to wait for the vinyl. Until then, if you'd like to hear about the album, stick around.

The first thing you need to know about this album is that it is buried under a mountain of (or built on a foundation of, pick your POV) vibes. Real or VSTi, it doesn't matter for our purpose, the vibes ain't nothin' but, sorry Barry. Vibes are one of those musical ingredients that are just... too good. Are they overused on this album, or does it fit with the downtempo lounge feel that works so well? I'm voting for the latter.

The weak point of the album is when it strays from its focus as an atmospheric downtempo rock act fronted by a distinctive female singer. I'm not much of a track-skipper, but found myself doing so whenever the dudes started singing. Apart from my personal belief that the female-vocal-in-music aesthetic should be ascendent right now, those tracks in particular just seemed weak, and made the album as a whole seem scattered. Perhaps it's the 'collective' feel of the band. How many members are there? 4? 5? 7? It was this impression that brought me to the Grenadine comparison.

The unfortunate Miss Farmer can't be rid of me, as a man of letters, at least, because our high school time was a musical turning point for me, and I was introduced to Grenadine through one of her mixtapes, though of course I reintroduced myself later when I actually had a CD player. They were an early nineties indie-lounge supergroup- my hands hurt just typing that- with a couple of albums and a few 7"s. Great stuff, one of those bands you have playing in the background and everyone says "WOW, who is this?" then goes and unsuccessfully tries to find the album. Everything I've said about PJWA more or less goes for them. Cutesy packaging, lounge vibe, atmosphere, great chick singer, dudes interrupting, occasional scattered feel, otherwise awesome.

The primary difference is that this isn't '92. That's almost 20 years ago, which makes me feel hella old, and also means that instead of barely riding a half-trough of weird indie underground exotica semi-enthusiasm, as Grenadine did, Point Juncture WA is right in the thriving locus of a musical outgrowth that (I hope) will have them rock out most thoroughly and successfully.

Just let the chick sing!

Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks for April 21st - 27th

Dear Readers,

Last Week I think that my favorite show was the Why?/Starfucker/Fall of Snow/Joe Von Appen thing last Friday at Holocene. All the bands played really well but honestly I think it was the inclusion of spoken word artist Joe Von Appen that pushed it over into a great show into an awesome show. It was a nice change from just music. Plus the guy was hilarious.

Any ways, there are incredible amounts of shows this week. Check out as many as you can. Y'know...if you want.

Monday, April 21st

Truth be known there is a non-Portland/'Couve show that I am tempted today. The Caribou and Fuck Buttons show at Doug Fir appeals to me. However if you want to keep it real (local). Peep these:
  • Valentine's is having a experimental music show featuring Inca Ore, Grouper, and Grandfather Claws. The darned thing is FREE. The Show Starts at 9 PM.
  • Tube is having a show featuring ultra-fun-to -watch Here Comes a Big Black Cloud. Though I have only seen them once at PDX Pop Now! 2007, it made a big enough impact to want to see them again. It will be interesting to see the band, who list eight members, in such a small space. They are playing with like minded New Thrill Parade (SF, CA). The show cost $3. The music starts at 9:30 PM
  • Or you could stay at home and let the show come to you via your radio or computer. Arya Imig's Sound Judgment show on KPSU is having Southern Belle play Live on the airwaves. You can listen on 1450 AM or online right here. The show is form 10 PM to 11 PM.
Tuesday, April 22nd

There are quite a few good ones on Tuesday. Choose wisely:
  • Mississippi Studios is having a show featuring David Karsten Daniels and Bennie Morrison. Why should you care? Because Justin Ringle (of Horse Feathers) is playing a solo set at the Show too. Plus I hear that Bennie Morrison plays sax in March Fourth, so it should be interesting to see what that will be like. The show costs $7-$8. The music starts at 8 PM.
  • Valentine's is having a good show on Tuesday. Graves, The Blank Tapes (Oakland), and Aidan Coughlan are all playing. I can vouch for Graves being good. I can also vouch for Valentine's shows also being consistently good. The show is FREE. The music starts sometime after 9 PM.
  • City Council candidate, Charles Lewis, is having throwing a show at Someday Lounge. It is called The Charles Lewis Concert. If features Alan Singley and Pants Machine, Mishka, Trio Subtronic, andQuivah. In addition to the music, he will be speaking and taking questions from the audience. Plus its FREE. The event starts at 8 PM.
  • Backspace is having a noise/experimental show on Tuesday. Excepter and Yellow Swans are both playing the show. Again, if you like Yellow Swans, this is one of their last shows as they are breaking up (later this summer). The show costs$8. The show is ALL AGES and starts at 7 PM.
Wednesday, April 23rd

One big show and a couple smaller shows:
  • The big show is Mirah and Spectratone International playing with Danbert Nobacon at The Mission Theater. Let me first say that I love me some Mirah music. Let me say secondly say that I have been a bit of a bad fan and have not listened to the album she is supporting for this. Apparently the songs are about the lives of bugs. There will be a multimedia show including stop motion films accompanying the performance. Sounds cool. The tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. The show starts at 7 PM (music to start at 8 PM).
  • Mississippi Pizza is having a pretty good show too. This one features Audie Darling, Leonard Mynx and Tom Thumb (Cape Cod). I have written about Both Audie and Leonard before and they both make lovely music (sometimes together). The interesting thing is that I randomly bought a Tom Thumb cd two weeks ago having never heard of him. Now he is playing in my town. He also writes good tunes, by the way. There is no listed cover (FREE?). The show starts at 9 PM.
  • The other smaller but good show is taking place at Tonic Lounge. Novels a French band will share the stage with Childlike Empress, and Air War. Novels have grunge as one of their listed genres. So does Childlike Empress. Match. Air War has Shoegaze as one of their listed genres. So does Childlike Empress. Match. If any of this sounds like you would enjoy it, then I would suggest you rally up some $5. The show starts at 9 PM.
Thursday, April 24th

Good shows for you Portland area people:
  • David Dondero is a singer and a songwriter. You can make judgments from that statement or from the following one. He also is on Conor "Bright Eyes" Obert's imprint Team Love and is playing Holocene. He is also playing with a band backing him. Some very good Portland bands, A Weather (also on Team Love) and Aan are playing as well. The show will run you $7. The show starts at 9 PM.
  • The Towne Lounge is having a good show. This one consists of The Friendly Skies, Pacific UV and Joust. I have seen and really enjoyed The Friendly Skies. I have heard good things regarding Pacific UV. And I liked the one song Joust has on their my space page. I predict an enjoyable evening for any one who attends. The show cost $5. The doors are at 9 PM.
  • However, if you wanted to grab a slice of pizza while you watched good music, I would suggest heading out to Mississippi Pizza. They have Gatos, The Bicycats (NY), and Love Menu (the only non-cat related band who is also the only band I had heard of). It should be good and is probably free (minus the pizza you order). The show starts at 9 PM.
  • The Know is a bar on Alberta St. They sometimes have bands play there. Thursday is one of those times. Check out the pop stylings of the caps! I am pretty sure that there is no cover at the Know. The show is listed as starting at 8 PM.
Friday, April 25th

Many shows to choose from:
  • KPSU is having a live performance by Nick Carceres as part of their show called The Hour Long. My guess is that is is an hour long. It is on you radio at 1450 AM or here. The show starts at 6PM.
  • If you like what you hear from that radio performance, or if you missed that radio performance, then you can see Nick Carceres perform at Clinton St. Pub with Will Carpenter and Mr. Free and The Satellite Freakout! (Tuscon). This apropriately enough is FREE. The show starts at 8 PM.
  • The Artistery is having a benefit for Rock'n'Roll Camp for Girls. They have lined up LKN, Xpodntocolrs, and Sick Sick Sister. Admittedly, I have only heard LKN. But it is for a very good cause, so you should check it out. The ALL AGES show is has a sliding scale price of $5-$10. The music starts at 8 PM.
  • Ground Kontrol is the location in the latest KPSU related awesome show. This one celebrates issue #3 of the KPSU magazine/program guide. The show offers the music of Strangers Die Every Day, New Century School Book, Dance Terror, and The Buttfrenchers. Interesting fact: AristeiA bought a guitar amp and cabinet from The Buttfuckers just months ago. The cover is $5. The music starts at 8:30 PM.
  • Backspace has been getting some pretty hot shows lately (see Tuesday). Friday they have BARR (LA), Pwrfl Power (Seattle), Alexis Gideon, and Over the Atlantic (Brooklyn). We have some major cities represented at the show. I guess you can sort of think of it as a sampler of what is going on in popular music on a nation wide scale. I have seen Alexis play in Carcrashlander but this apparently is very different (rumors of stop motion films abound). All for just $8. The ALL AGES show starts at 8 PM.
  • Kelly's Olympian is having a show with Tractor Operator, Excellence, and Yeltsin. I like me some Tractor Operator. Maybe you will also. I just listened to the other bands. They sound good too (Indie-Rock!). This is the Portland cd release show for their album A Closer Walk with Yeltsin. The show is $5 . The show starts at 10 PM.
  • East End is having a pop night on Friday. Their show includes the pop numbers of Soft Tags, The Vulturines, and The Fall Colors. Also there is supposedly a super famous guest appearing. Might be worth checking out. The show is $5. The show starts at 9 PM.
Saturday, April 26th

Too many shows to choose from:
  • The show I am going to for sure is the early Loch Lomond show at Mississippi Studios. Y La Bamba will be opening up and debuting her new band which includes drums, glockenspiel, accordion, two guitars, bass, and three part harmonies. It will be awesome. There is also a late show for Loch Lomond where Holcombe Waller will open. If you have not seen Loch Lomond live, you are missing out. It is truly incredible to see their music recreated in a live setting. Both shows are $10-$12. The early show is at 7 PM. The late show is at 10 PM.
  • Also in North Portland, The Waypost is having a really cool show. Sweeping Exits, Museum, and Church are all playing as part of a series of shows that Arya Imig puts on at The Waypost on the last Friday of every month (at least I think thats the deal). Also I want to express again that I really like Church. The show is ALL AGES and FREE. The show starts at 8 PM.
  • Boy Gorilla, the very talented and young musician label/collective(?) is having a showcase at the Towne Lounge on Friday. Ghosties, Southern Belle, and The Black Black Black are all playing. It is as they used to say, "all good". The show will only set you back $5. The music starts at 9:30 PM.
  • Kelly's Olympian has a show worth checking out too. It involves Michael the Blind, Thanks Kipp, and Ladies & Gentlemen. I have saw Michael the Blind at one of the WWeek's Lounge series and was rather impressed. The show costs $5. It begins at 10 PM.
  • Someday Lounge is having a pretty quality show on Friday with Jackie-O Motherfucker, Indian Jewelry (they claim Afgahnistan but I don't believe them), Ill Ease (Brooklyn), and Cexfucx. Check out this quote from Liz Armstrong of the Chicago Reader, "Indian Jewelry plays the kind of music I want to hear in my head during sex". Sold. The show is $8. The music starts at 9 :30 PM.
  • The Doug Fir is having Point Juncture, WA play with The Lymbyc System (Austin/Phoenix) and Head Like a Kite. Point Juncture is real good like. I have no idea about the other bands, but the Doug Fir claims all to be Dream-core. The cover is $8. The start time is 9 PM.
  • The Artistery is hosting a diverse show with Late Night Curly, D Numbers, and Gejius. All of the acts are of the "doing their own thing" variety of music. It should be pretty enjoyable. The ALL AGES show is $6. The music starts at 8 PM.
  • East End is hosting Pre (UK), The Mae Shi (LA), Panther, and Fist Fite. I could find nothing on Pre . But I really enjoyed the sound of Mae Shi. Most shows at East End are $5. The show starts at 9 PM.
Sunday, April 27th

I found three shows. But they are all really good shows. I do not know which I should go to. They are both so appealing. If you are under 21, the choice is easy. Go to the ALL AGES on. But I'm 26. I could go to either of the other two. I keep swinging from one show to the other and then to the other in my mind. I guess I will leave it up to fate.
So there you have your good shows list. I hope you make it to some. I already know that I am going to miss several great shows this week, so help a guy and see the ones I don't. As always, if you see me at any of these shows come up and say hi. Have a great week.

-Ben

Ben Meyercord's Live Music Picks for March 17-23

Hey folks,

A lot of good shows are happening this week. For real. Check it out:

Monday, March 17th

Its Saint Patrick's Day. You will probably be drinking green beer (I'm going to try and find some green root beer) and that will be that. But if you want some music check these places out:
  • Holocene is having two non local bands play, Beach House and Papercuts. I am super stoked to see both of them. I am really excited that local band, Au, is opening though. First of all it will be good exposure to local talent. Second of all I get to list this show for the blog. And third, and probably most important of all, Au is really cool. Everyone wins! The Show is $10 at the door. The doors open at 9 PM.
  • Of course Valentines has some fresh Portland talent to expose you to as well. This time it is in the form of Sabertooth, recent signees to locally based Arena Rock Recording Company label,Tractor Operator and Split Rail Fense. The show is FREE. It will begin sometime after 9 PM.
Tuesday, March 18th

You have options. Many many options.
  • Usually I personally head straight to Zilla Sake on Tuesday and I call it a night. They have a brillant Open Mic hosted by the brilliant Y La Bamba. It starts at 8 PM.
  • There is also the open stage event called The Incubator at Someday Lounge hosted by CIMTB contributor Gabriel Darling. This FREE event usually starts around 9 PM.
  • But there are actually some shows that are happening on Tuesday. Like at Valentines who is having four bands who you probably have never heard of playing for free. The great thing about the shows at Valentines is that even though you have never heard of the bands you usually leave thinking "Why have I ever heard of ____. They are so good." Tonight Everybody, JP Jenkins Sean Ongely, Alas Alak Alaska, and Whitman will be playing sets. The show is, again, FREE. The music will start sometime after 9 PM.
  • Or you could go to the Doug Fir who is hosting an all local bill celebrating the release of the new Day of Lions record, "Come Down From the Mountain", out on Yucon Records. They will be playing with Eskimo & Sons, who I have wanted to see for a while, and Dolorean, always a good show. The show cost $7. The show starts promptly at 9 PM.
  • Holocene has some local bands, System and Station and The Rainy States, opening up for the former Dismemberment Plan singer Travis Morrison. Travis solo is no D Plan show, but one never knows what can happen at a System and Station show. The show is $8. The music will start sometime after 9 PM.
Wednesday, March 19

A couple things are cooking on Wednesday. Like this:
  • At Moxies Soda Shop, made famous by We're From Japan!, is having another show for those of you in the Vancouver area. This time around you got two Portland bands on tour, Whitman and Alas Alak Alaska along with three bands from the 'Couve: The Shivas, Raw Tofu and Talking Backwards. The show is a low $5. Things get started at 6:30 ALL AGES.
  • Someday Lounge has something interesting happening as well. Check this out straight from the Someday web page: An All-Arts Extravaganza/CD Release Party for: BARONS IN TREES, feat. LESLIE KERNOCHAN of vagabond opera, vaudevillian clown JUSTIN ROSE, painter SEAN SAMUEL KELLY, film artist LUKE NORBY of the Video Girl Friday, and incendiary dancer Amy Hatfield —9pm, Barons in Trees invites local artists to perform their artwork as a response to the Barons' music while video captures the collaboration and projects it for the audience in real time. Sounds pretty cool to me. The show costs $7. The doors are at 9 PM.
Thursday, March 20th

Its pay day. Do you want to celebrate by going to a show? Heres what is happening:
  • There are early shows. One of the early shows is at Mississippi Studios. This being Point Juncture, WA opening for some band called El Olio Wolof (looks like they will be playing a few shows with Nick Jaina in CA). Looks like it will be a pretty cool show. The thing will cost you $8-$10. It starts at 8 PM.
  • The other early show is going down at The Know. It is loud rawk from A Gatherin' Storm and, assuming this is the right band, the electro rawk of A Pack of wolves. The show is FREE and starts at 8 PM.
Friday, March 21st

It is the day after payday! Want to continue the celebration? I mean I guess you could see Grand Archives at Dante's, but that wouldn't local. Here is what is happening in the way of local shows:
  • You can save some of that hard earned cash, by attending CD Baby's 10th anniversary show at the East End with AristeiA and Seti. This is awesome because it is a) FREE, b) AristeiA makes its official comeback show, and c) you can celebrate a company that helps all sorts of independent musicians release their records on good terms without the aid of a record label. Yay! And seriously, AristeiA is awesome. FREE. The show will start sometime after 9 PM.
  • There is also a really cool event happening at Audiocinema. It is being billed, "The Church of The New Mustachio". It features short films by the sketch comedy collective know only as Los Mustachios. It will also feature "Hymns" or music by The Taxpayers, Raised by Television, and Autopilot is for Lovers. This too is FREE. And it is ALL AGES, so it starts at 7 PM.
  • The Hush (the place you always hear about above the Tube at 14th NW 3rd) is having a show on Friday as well. They are having Church, Museum, Almost Nearly, and Electric Blanket (I am unsure if this is the right band link). I have only seen Church, but they were really good. The show did not have any cover listed. But it did say that it is ALL AGES and starts at 8 PM.
  • The Twilight Cafe and Bar is having a show featuring Here Comes a Big Black Cloud an experience to behold. They are playing with Purple Rhinestone Eagle, Reptilian Civilian, and The Taxpayers (they have a busy night). The show is FREE. It starts at 9 PM.
  • The Someday Lounge is also having a show that has Portland Bands. The Velvet Teen is playing a show with Crosstide (Portland), Aloha (Awesome), and Carcrashlander (Portland and Awesome). It is worth it to see Aloha and Carcrashlander alone. Plus I have heard good things about The Velvet Teen. The show is $8 in advance and $10 at the door. The show starts at 9 PM.
Saturday, March 22nd

There are some shows, on Saturday. All kinds of shows. For instance:
  • Berbati's Pan is hosting a heavy music festival , March into Darkness, all weekend. Saturday is day two and the only one I am interested in. I am not going to lie, this is not the sort of show I normally attend, but I will be there. Local band Agalloch, whom I have never heard of before, is headlining. The reason I am going is Red Sparrows and Russian Circles. Both excellent bands that make heavy music enjoyable for people who people who might not like usually enjoy heavy music. Grayceon from San Fran will also play. The show will cost $10 in Advance, $14 at the door, or you can buy $25 for a three day pass for the whole festival. The doors are at 8 PM.
  • The funny thing is, on the other end of the spectrum is, the show I would normally go to is the Headlights, and Evangelicals show at The Towne Lounge with local act Southerly headlining the night. It is some pretty poppy stuff (Headlights at least). This show is $6 at the door. The music starts at 9:30.
  • But back to the not as poppy stuff, over at Slabtown the band Air War is playing a show with Microtia, and Childlike Empress. From what I remember all are kinda heavy. I really like how Air War describes themselves.
  • Perhaps a house show is what you crave? The line up at Dekum Manor is pretty good on Saturday. You have Reporter, Fist Fite, Thunder! Thunder! Thunder!, and World's Greatest Ghosts. This is a super fun place to see a show. This is a FREE show (there might be donations?) and it is ALL AGES. It all starts at 8 PM.
  • Hot shows not your thing, how about hockey rinks? Head out to the Mt. Hood Sports Arena for the "Protect Our Precious Fluids 150 Minute Festival". The poster boasts a light show and "films?". The Hand That Bleeds and Party Killer are set to play. I have been wondering if Party Killer is a band or not I kept seeing their sticker everywhere. The event will cost you $5. It is ALL AGES and starts at 5 PM.
  • Or you could just go to a solid three local band bill featuring Ferocious Eagle, Reverse Dotty and the Candy Cane Shivs, and Junkface at the Tonic Lounge. This show is $5. The music starts at 9:30 PM.
Sunday, March 23rd

I only saw one show. Please comment if there is a show that you think I missed.
  • The Artistery is having some folks visit from Olympia to open for local act Kelli Schaefer. Specifically they are having Polka Dot Dot Dot and Ben Kamen. I have wanted to see Polk Dot Dot Dot since I first heard them many moons ago. This show costs $6. The show is ALL AGES Doors are at 7:30 PM; the music starts at 8 PM.
So please go out and support your local musicians. And as always, come say hi to me if you see me at any of these fine shows.

-Ben
