Giving up my iPod for a Walkman
When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.
My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day.
He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realized he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.
When I saw it for the first time, its colour also struck me. Nowadays gadgets come in a rainbow of colours but this was only one shade - a bland grey. read more...
I thought this story was from The Onion but it's from BBC News! - ste. goldie
This is so surreal to me.. I mean, I'm only 25 (well, 24 and 354 days or whatever) but I had a portable cassette player when I was younger. It might have even been a Sony. It was plastic and in bright colors. They had bright colors in the 80's and 90's too, kid!
ReplyDeleteAlso strangely enough, a lot of experimental\noise\etc type bands are starting to put things out on cassette again because it's cheap and generally speaking cassettes tend to not, say, skip like a cd-r. If a cassette is fucked up, you can tell because it's melted or all the tape is pulled out, you don't get any surprises. I still prefer records or digital formats though, because having to rewind and fast forward annoys the hell out of me.
